When is plain water sufficient?

Symptoms can be misleading because they resemble dehydration: headache, nausea, confusion, swelling. Therefore, during long performances, it’s not enough to just "drink plenty" – you need to drink smart and replenish salts as well.

Before you head out, ask yourself three questions:
- How long? Up to an hour, water is fine; over an hour, consider an electrolyte drink.
- How intense and in what heat? The more you sweat, the sooner you should reach for electrolytes.
- Have I eaten a balanced diet today? A varied diet will cover minerals for regular activity on its own.
A simple guideline: if you can manage your workout without significant sweating and finish within an hour, water is sufficient. Once you’re sweating enough to have a wet shirt and you’re outside for over an hour, electrolytes are worth it.
