A lot has already been written about the importance of proper hydration during activity. Adequate fluid intake and a well-hydrated body are among the basic prerequisites for quality sports performance. But is that enough during intense exercise? If you are preparing for more demanding physical activity, you should think not only about replenishing fluids but also about energy intake, which will optimally support your long-term performance.

Energy – where does it come from in the body?

During physical activity, energy is always being consumed, and the body draws it from several sources – carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. During intense exercise, the body primarily uses carbohydrates as a source of energy, which is why you should replenish them during activity. If carbohydrate stores become depleted, fatigue and exhaustion set in, leading to a premature end of performance.

Primary source of energy – glucose

Blood glucose is the primary source of energy for any activity, including brain function. Maintaining a balanced level is essential not only for physical but also for mental performance, which is often a limiting factor in overall athletic results. You should never consume more than 30 g of glucose at once, as this amount may cause digestive issues and diarrhea, negatively affecting your sports experience.

Where does energy come from when muscle glycogen stores are depleted?

During strenuous muscular activity, when the immediate reserves of sugars and free fatty acids in the blood are quickly depleted, another energy source must be found to continue the activity without problems. Before the body mobilizes fat and glycogen stores, it uses simpler compounds as “fuel.” In this case, specific amino acids serve as the source of energy, which the body obtains by breaking down muscle proteins, leading to the degradation of muscle mass. The result is clear – increasing fatigue and a rapid decline in performance.

To prevent this, it is important to maintain energy intake during exercise. This is not just about solving acute energy crises but mainly about prevention – that is, the gradual intake of slowly released carbohydrates. We recommend using the product Endurosnack.

How to do it?

Part of the energy in the form of simple sugars is contained in isotonic sports drinks (e.g. Isodrinx). However, the energy content may not be sufficient for the given performance. That is when energy gels or bars come into play.

Among concentrated energy sources is, for example, Carbosnack. It is an energy gel that contains a mixture of simple sugar glucose (also known as dextrose) and hydrolyzed corn starches – so-called maltodextrins. These sugars require minimal digestion (glucose none at all) and are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream. Because it is not purely glucose, the risk of intestinal discomfort – commonly associated with high consumption of products containing only glucose – is reduced.

Another major advantage of Carbosnack is its gel consistency, which ensures optimal absorption and extremely fast energy delivery. Carbosnack is enriched with two functional amino acids – taurine and glycine. Taurine positively affects brain function in situations of energy depletion and supports neuromuscular transmission. Glycine is an amino acid involved in energy production, as it contributes to creatine synthesis in the body.

Carbosnack is therefore an energy gel intended for immediate resolution of energy crises, for supplying energy before a demanding phase of activity, and for intense performances where it is necessary to maximally support energy intake that is instantly utilized for muscle work.

Endurosnack has a different composition, and therefore its use differs from Carbosnack. Endurosnack is suitable for long-lasting endurance activities of an aerobic nature. Thanks to its unique composition, packed with many functional substances, it supports endurance performance while protecting muscle mass and acting preventively against body acidification.

The carbohydrate component includes not only glucose but also special isomaltulose (Palatinose™), which is absorbed slowly but steadily, supplying the body with a large amount of energy over time without negatively increasing blood glucose levels. A rapid increase in blood glucose leads to increased production of insulin, a hormone responsible for maintaining internal balance and also the most powerful anabolic hormone.

Elevated insulin levels can destabilize blood sugar levels and cause excess sugar to be converted into fat and stored. In such a case, processes opposite to those desired during exercise (fat storage instead of fat utilization) begin to occur in the body. If excess insulin starts fulfilling its role, the use of fat as an energy source is suppressed, which is not desirable during physical activity.

Endurosnack is enriched with several functional substances. These include branched-chain essential amino acids BCAA (L-Leucine, L-Isoleucine, L-Valine) in the optimal ratio of 2:1:1, which help protect muscle mass during exercise. Other amino acids in Endurosnack include taurine and glycine, mentioned above. Last but not least, L-alanine and L-carnosine are important components that help counteract body acidification. Increased acidity always leads to reduced performance.

Both Carbosnack, and Endurosnack intentionally contain no minerals, so they do not disrupt the mineral balance when consumed together with isotonic drinks and can be easily combined with any sports beverage. It is recommended to use them in combination with sports drinks such as Unisport or Isodrinx.
