Nuts in a Jar or Not All Butters Are Created Equal

The love for snacking on nuts has been around since ancient times. Today, nuts are an important ingredient in everyday meals all over the world. Besides their exceptional taste, we also appreciate their high content of plant fats, fiber, proteins, and minerals. For these reasons, a variety of foods have started to be made from nuts, such as nut butters, which are gaining popularity every day, both in the fitness sphere and among the general population.

However, the term butter is not entirely accurate, as the composition, compared to classic butter, is completely different. Nut creams primarily contain unsaturated fatty acids, higher amounts of proteins and carbohydrates. The specific amounts of micronutrients can vary from type to type, but they generally contain B vitamins, vitamin E, and among the minerals, especially magnesium and phosphorus, and sometimes also calcium and zinc.

Most nut creams are suitable for vegetarians due to their composition, and pure peanut butter can also be included in the diet of those who prefer a strictly vegan approach. The greatest benefit of plant fats, however, is the aforementioned unsaturated fatty acids, including omega-3 (ALA) and omega-6, which have a positive effect on our cardiovascular system and also contribute to maintaining normal cholesterol levels.

Ingredients of Nut Creams

Hazelnuts

These nuts are the fruits of the sprawling common hazel bush. In addition to healthy fats, proteins, and fiber, they also contain beneficial B vitamins, such as thiamine, which has beneficial effects on our heart, positively influences our psyche, and nervous system. Vitamin B6 supports the metabolism of proteins, sugars, and fats and also plays a significant role in the production of red blood cells.

Cashews

These delicious fruits of the western cashew tree are rich in tannins, vitamin C, iron, zinc, and magnesium. Thanks to these micronutrients, they support our immunity, and vitamin C also positively influences collagen formation. Among the numerous beneficial effects of magnesium, it supports psychological functions, is sought after in muscle cramps, and contributes to electrolyte balance.

Chocolate

Cocoa contains a whole range of useful vitamins and minerals, such as B vitamins, vitamin E, magnesium, and iron. All these nutrients are essential for the proper functioning of the nervous system. It is also generally known that after consuming sweet dishes, many people also release the "happiness hormone" serotonin.

Freeze-Dried Raspberries

In some nut creams, freeze-dried raspberries are often added, which are raspberries dried by freezing. This gentle drying method removes all the water from the fruits but retains their nutrients. The result is crispy and crunchy raspberries full of original flavor, vitamins, and minerals.

Whey Protein

Whey, known in English as whey, is the protein found in cow's milk. It contains a higher percentage of branched-chain amino acids, which allows for faster protein synthesis, thus faster digestibility. By consuming creams that contain added whey protein, you can supplement your diet with the necessary proteins and BCAA amino acids, which are key to your fitness goals.

Himalayan Salt

Some nut creams are enriched with various flavoring additives, such as Himalayan salt, which is generally known to have a naturally high content of minerals and trace elements. However, never forget that the recommended daily intake of salt is a maximum of 5–7 g.

Ghee

This is pure butter fat of the highest quality obtained by clarifying fresh butter. It has a pleasant buttery aroma and, due to its high smoke point, is suitable for cooking. Ghee is also very popular for its content of vitamins A, D, E, K, and antioxidants. Ayurvedic medicine believes that ghee strengthens ojas, the source of life energy, which is the foundation of immunity, both physical and mental well-being.

Coconut Sugar

It is a very tasty and popular alternative to sweeteners because it is not refined sugar. Among vitamins, it naturally contains B vitamins, and among minerals, magnesium, potassium, zinc, iron, and also beneficial antioxidants for the body.

Peanut Butter

Few of us know that the peanut is a legume, whose seeds are the peanuts we know, which look and taste like nuts. Quality creams made exclusively from peanuts have the advantage of retaining all the values of the original raw material, are usually free from palm oil, preservatives, and artificial colors. Peanuts contain antioxidants, minerals such as potassium, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, manganese, copper, and B vitamins. Peanuts also naturally contain coenzyme Q10, and about half of the fats in peanuts are monounsaturated fatty acids.

Uses of Nut Creams

Nut and peanut creams have a wide range of uses in gastronomy. In cold cuisine, they can be used, for example, to flavor cereal porridge, yogurts, salad dressings, or smoothies. Due to their creamy consistency, they are easily spreadable and are suitable for spreading on bread, pancakes, or for preparing simple snacks in the form of fruit spread with nut cream. They also find applications in thermal technological processes when baking pastries, muffins, flavoring creamy soups, and are often used in Asian cuisine. In short, gastronomy is a matter of taste, and there are no limits to imagination. It should be noted that they are also very popular among "non-cooks," who enjoy a simple spoonful of nut cream just like that.

What to Watch Out For

After listing all the benefits, we must also mention what to watch out for. Nuts are among the common food allergens that can trigger severe allergic reactions. A common mistake is so-called "healthy snacking," where a person, under the influence of the beneficial composition and great taste, forgets that even though they contain those "healthy fats," they are still primarily fats, which, as we know, have a high energy value. Then we often find ourselves surprised at how quickly the pounds add up. One 10 g spoonful of this delicacy can contain up to 260 kJ. So we have no choice but to adhere to the golden rule of "everything in moderation."
